Indonesian Media Visits GAC | Exploring GAC's Smart Manufacturing Chain and Witnessing 4 GAC Premieres at Auto Shanghai

2025-04-20

From April 20 to 24, a delegation of 36 Indonesian mainstream traditional media and top-tier self-media outlets conducted an in-depth visit to GAC R&D Center, AlON's Intelligent Eco-Factory, and Inpow battery factory, while witnessing the global debut of GAC’s new vehicle models at the 21st Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition.

At Inpow battery factory, the Indonesian media delegation was amazed by the extreme test results of Magazine Battery 2.0. The battery remained stable under rigorous trials including nail penetration, torsion, and ballistic impact, with no thermal runaway occurring. Media representatives acknowledged that this achievement showcased GAC’s exceptional battery safety technology, setting a new benchmark for EV safety.

During their visit to the AION assembly workshop, the media explored the entire assembly process of AION series and GAC's advanced smart manufacturing techniques firsthand. They then moved on to a professional test track where they had several models testing driven, including the E9, the Trumchi Aspire S7, HYPTEC HL, HYPTEC HT, HYPTEC GT, and AION UT. These rigorous tests including high-speed cornering and emergency braking allowed the media to fully evaluate their performance.

After the visit, an in-depth media exchange session was held. The event was attended by Wei Haigang, President of GAC INTERNATIONAL, Wang Shunsheng, Vice President of GAC INTERNATIONAL, Zheng Chunqi, Vice President of GAC AION, Andrew Nasuri, Indomobil Group Director, along with CEO Andry Ciu and COO Qin Bangshu of GAC and Indomobil's Indonesian joint venture.

At the media exchange session, Wei Haigang, President of GAC INTERNATIONAL, delivered the opening address: "GAC INTERNATIONAL has consistently regarded Indonesia as one of our most vital strategic markets. Since the brand launch last year, we have established a solid market foundation through continuous enhancement of localized product portfolios and strengthening of dealer network development. Moving forward, GAC will further intensify investments in the Indonesian market, with focused efforts on advancing NEV models deployment and upgrading localized services. We are committed to delivering superior product and service experiences to Indonesian consumers. We look forward to collaborating with partners across various sectors in Indonesia to jointly explore this promising market."

When addressing the Indonesian media's question on "How does GAC perceive the potential of the Southeast Asian electric vehicle market," Wei Haigang, President of GAC INTERNATIONAL stated: "Southeast Asia, being one of the most promising emerging markets for global NEV growth, has become a strategic priority in GAC INTERNATIONAL's global deployment. We observe that Indonesia, Thailand, and other regional countries are actively building an NEV ecosystem through policy incentives and infrastructure enhancement. With growing sustainable development awareness, the ASEAN NEV market is projected to expand from US1.51 billionin 2025 to US6.23 billion by 2030, representing a compound annual growth rate of 32.73%. This growth trajectory further reinforces our commitment to deepening operations in this strategic region."

At the media day of the Auto Shanghai on April 23, the Indonesian media delegation witnessed the grand debut of several key new models from GAC Group, including GAC Hyptec’s new shooting brake concept car the EARTH, GAC Motor Xiangwang S9, GAC Aion’s L4 Robotaxi, and GAC’s concept pickup truck GAC PICKUP 01. Among them, the GAC Motor Xiangwang S9 is a model jointly developed through deep innovation collaboration by the "Intelligent EV Trinity" (GAC, Huawei, and CATL), marking a new phase of systemic innovation in China’s intelligent EV industry. By integrating Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 4.0, intelligent cockpit HarmonySpace 5, CATL’s XYAO Battery, and GAC’s X-SOUL AI Panorama technology, it establishes a trinity technology matrix of "perception-energy-intelligence control," setting a new benchmark for 300,000-class new energy SUVs. It also breaks foreign monopolies in the high-end market, injecting strategic momentum into the globalization of "Intelligent Manufacturing from China" and accelerating the global automotive industry’s shift toward the "China Solution."

Indonesia, one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing automotive markets, saw its new energy vehicle (NEV) sales surge by 138% year-on-year to 40,561 units in 2024, with Chinese brands capturing 90% of the market share. The government further accelerated electrification through its new BEV policy. Against this backdrop, GAC Group has rapidly entered the market via a joint venture model: In 2024, adopting a "CBU first + simultaneous factory construction" strategy, GAC achieved a breakthrough from zero to one, successfully launching two star models, the Aion Y Plus and Hyptec HT, with the Hyptec HT being awarded the "Best Premium Pure Electric SUV of the Year" title. Starting in May 2025, after its Indonesian plant enters mass production, GAC will overcome CBU quota limitations and expand its reach across ASEAN and global markets.

Moving forward, GAC will leverage Indonesia as a strategic anchor, capitalizing on localized production and policy incentives. By deploying smart SUVs, compact city cars, and hybrid transition solutions, the automaker aims to rank among Southeast Asia’s top three EV brands within five years. Concurrently, GAC will intensify R&D in autonomous driving and next-gen battery technologies, using the region as a springboard to enhance its global competitiveness.
